I have been struggling with what to write for a few days in light of the terrorist attack in Paris and the violence being perpetuated throughout the world. My heart aches with the amount of hatred that exists between humans. I keep wishing I had a megaphone to the world and I could yell “STOP”. Everyone. Just stop. And take a breath. What if we all decided, right here, right now, to end violence? What if we all became deeply compassionate simply by choosing to be so and realized that every hurt that we inflict on another, we inflict on ourselves? What if, we all just unanimously decided to embody peace and that our world was a peaceful one? I know I’m a dreamer…and I know I’m not the only one.
There is a collective insanity that seems to be ruling our planet. And it all starts in the mind. It starts with thoughts that take shape and form into outward expressions. Thoughts of fear, aggression, hatred, violence, superiority, greed, judgement, revenge…the list goes on. People are ruled by their minds. It is not just one group of people, it is a worldwide sickness. Look anywhere in the world, and you will find hatred and violence. It is heartbreaking.
I’ve been thinking and feeling and trying to make sense of it all. I feel overwhelmed and wonder what I can do. Then, I just breathe and remember that I am only in control of myself…my actions, my responses, my thoughts, my words. I must continue to work on myself, getting my own mind and life to be as peaceful as possible and I must continue teaching others how to do the same.
We have to find peace within ourselves and extend it to every situation, every place and every person we come in contact with. It is up to each of us to create peace in the world…to live it and breathe it everywhere we find ourselves, regardless of what is happening. We can still stand our ground and we can do it peacefully. It is no easy task, but it is absolutely necessary if we want to tip the scales towards a more peaceful world.
Where our attention goes, energy flows. Using violence to stop violence only creates more violence and allows it to grow. It is up to each of us to live in harmony, to spread peace. No one else is coming. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We must be the change.
